READ ME - Using IntelliKeys with Stage Seven
=============================================

You can use the IntelliKeys keyboard from IntelliTools, Inc. with the Stage Seven Assessment software. There are several different IntelliKeys overlays for Stage Seven. The appropriate overlay will automatically be loaded, based on the input method setting you choose in Preferences.

Follow the instructions below to set up and use IntelliKeys with Stage Seven.

Select "Mouse and Keyboard" as your input method in the Preferences screen unless you wish to step scan or autoscan using IntelliKeys or a switch connected to IntelliKeys (see below).

If you are using a USB Keyboard, make sure you have the most current version of the USB software. You can download the latest version from www.intellitools.com.

Be sure to attach the IntelliKeys before starting Stages.
Do not disconnect it until you have exited Stages.

How to set up IntelliKeys for Stage Seven
-------------------------------------------
1. Connect IntelliKeys to your computer according to the instructions that came with it.

2. Start up your computer.

3. Put the Stages or the Stage Seven CD in the CD-ROM drive.

4. If all 7 Stages are on one CD, choose Stage Seven from the opening screen.

5. After starting Stage Seven activities and entering the learner's name, click the
"Change Settings" button at the bottom right of the screen.

6. At the Preferences screen, select "Mouse and Keyboard", "Auto Scan", or "Step Scan"
    as the input method.

7. Place a copy of the appropriate overlay on IntelliKeys (see printing instructions below).

The learner can then access the Stage Seven activities using IntelliKeys or a switch connected to IntelliKeys.

* Using Standard IntelliKeys overlays for typing
> Use with "Mouse and Keyboard" input method.

For typing activities (Copying Words, Assess High-Frequency Words, Assess Rhyming Words, Spelling & Grammar, Writing Sentences, and Making Stories), use standard IntelliKeys overlays with numbers and letters. The overlay will automatically be sent when you place the overlay on the IntelliKeys keyboard. Press the numbers and letters on the overlay to type them into the text box on the screen.

* Overlays for 'Building Sentences' activity
      (Level 1, 2, 3 overlays)
> Use with "Mouse and Keyboard" input method.

When you start the Building Sentences activity with an IntelliKeys keyboard connected, the Stage Seven software will automatically load the "Stage 7 Level 1", "Stage 7 Level 2", or "Stage 7 Level 3" overlay, depending on the activity level you choose. Print the overlay (see instructions below)
and place it on the IntelliKeys keyboard when you begin the activity. Press the word on the overlay to enter it into the text box on the screen.

* Overlay for 'Explore' activities (Stages Click overlay)
> Use with "Mouse and Keyboard" or "Step Scan" input methods.

When you start the Explore Rhyming Words or Explore High-Frequency Words activities with an IntelliKeys keyboard connected and the input method set to "Mouse and Keyboard" or "Step Scan", the Stage Seven software will automatically load the "Stages Click" overlay. Print the overlay (see instructions below) and place it on the IntelliKeys keyboard when you begin the activity. Press the target to advance from screen to screen in these activities. You can also press <Space>, <Tab>, or <Enter> on a standard keyboard or on an IntelliKeys keyboard overlay instead of using this overlay.

* Overlay for step scanning (Stage 7 Stepscan overlay)
> Use with "Step Scan" input method.

If you wish to step scan using the IntelliKeys keyboard, choose "Keyboard" as your input method. Then click either 'IntelliKeys keyboard' or '2 switches' so that information will be included in the report. The Stages Stepscan overlay will automatically be loaded for use with the non-Explore Stage Seven activities. You can step scan using the IntelliKeys keyboard or with two switches connected to IntelliKeys.

Use the three targets on the overlay to step scan through any of the activities.

To step forward through the objects on the screen, press the Forward button on the overlay,
Switch 1 or <Tab> on a standard keyboard.
To step backwards through the objects, press the Back button on the overlay or the ~ key.
To select the highlighted object, press the target in the middle of the overlay,
Switch 2, or the <Enter> key.

Step scanning is organized in groups. First you will highlight and select a group, then the word or letter within that group that you wish to type. Press <Esc> on a standard keyboard to exit scanning. Note that you will use the onscreen keyboard for typing activities when the input method is set to Step Scan. Use the "Mouse and Keyboard" setting to use a standard keyboard or the alphanumeric overlays from IntelliKeys.

* Overlay for autoscanning (Stages Autoscan overlay)
> Use with "Auto Scan" input method.

If you wish to autoscan using the IntelliKeys keyboard, choose "Auto Scan" as your input method. Click the check box labeled "The switch is connected yo IntelliKeys or the learner is using IntelliKeys as a switch". This will automatically load the Stages Autoscan overlay. This overlay sends a mouse-click to the activities.

Press anywhere on IntelliKeys or press a switch connected to IntelliKeys to start autoscanning. Press it again to select the object on the screen that is highlighted.

In all activities except the Explore activities, autoscanning is organized in groups. First you will highlight and select a group, then the word or letter within that group that you wish to type.

Press <Esc> on a standard keyboard to pause scanning. Press IntelliKeys or a switch attached to it to restart scanning. Note that you will use the onscreen keyboard for typing activities when the input method is set to Auto Scan. Use the "Mouse and Keyboard" setting to use a standard keyboard or the alphanumeric overlays from IntelliKeys.

How to print the overlay
----------------------------------
You can print from PDF files of the overlays. They are located in the Overlays:PDFs folder on your Stages CD. Double-click the desired overlay PDF to open it. These files require Adobe Reader to open them. (Adobe Reader is provided on this CD and is also available for free download at www.adobe.com.)

The overlay files for Stage Seven are:
   Stages Autoscan.pdf

An alternative way to send the overlay
----------------------------------------
If for any reason the overlay isn't sent automatically by the Stage Four software, you can use one of the following alternative methods.

For USB IntelliKeys users, use the USB IntelliKeys Control Panel:

1. Open the USB IntelliKeys Control Panel by choosing its icon on the task bar.
2. Click the Advanced tab in the USB IntelliKeys Control Panel.
3. Click the 'With this overlay:' radio button.
4. Click the Browse button to select an overlay.
5. Locate the Overlays folder on the Stages CD and select one of the overlays listed above.

For Classic IntelliKeys users, use Overlay Sender:
(located in the Overlays:Classic Tools folder on this CD)

1. Open the Overlays folder on the Stages CD.
2. Double-click the Overlay Sender icon.
3. At the dialog box, locate the Overlays folder on the Stages CD and select one of the overlays
   listed above.

Additional note for Macintosh users
-------------------------------------
Stages should automatically install 3 required IntelliTools files that allow Stages to run with IntelliKeys. If your IntelliKeys keyboard does not respond and the overlay is not sent, you may wish to check that the files were installed.

To check for the 3 required IntelliKeys files:

1. Navigate to this folder on your hard drive:
						 OS X computers: Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:IntelliTools
       OS 9 computers: System Folder:Application Support:IntelliTools
2. These 3 files should be present in that folder:
       Carbon Sending.shlb
       Classic Sending Helper
       Classic Sending.shlb
3. If those 3 files are not present, you can copy them from your Stages CD.
They are located in the IntelliTools folder. Select them and drag them to install them.
